11th Grade Curriculum 

Social Studies - US History  2 semesters
In this continuation of American History, students will be required to read primary documents upon which our country was founded (Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, Thomas Paine's Common Sense, selections from The Federalist Papers.)  The goals of US History are to study the development and driving ideas behind United States History to: a) become literate citizens, b) become conversant with the language of history and American life, c) evaluate past activity and thought according to scriptural norms and, d) see how Americans have lived in obedience or disobedience to God's command for holy living.

Language Arts - British Literature  2 semesters
This class surveys the development of the literature of Great Britain from Anglo-Saxon times to the modern era.  Students read works such as Robinson Crusoe, Wuthering Heights, Lord of the Flies, and Macbeth to develop skills in critical reading and comprehension, and to understand the historical roots of our language.  Emphasis in this course is on developing critical thinking and writing skills through reading, discussion, and writing about the literature.  Students will study grammar skills as they apply to these areas and will gain proficiency in oral communication skills through presentations of group and individual projects. Students attend and evaluate a professional theater production.  This class is offered in alternate years to 11th and 12th graders.

Language Arts -American Literature  2 semesters
American Literature builds on earlier foundations of composition, literary analysis, vocabulary, and critical thinking.  As students encounter prose, poetry, and nonfiction from the major literary periods, they consider style and theme from a Biblical perspective and the context of the writer's life and times.  They practice and further develop their ability to write clearly and effectively.  Vocabulary study concentrates on building skills related to college entrance exams. Students will gain proficiency in oral communication through presentations of group and individual projects.  Longer works read include The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, and In the Presence of My Enemies.  Students attend and evaluate a professional theater production.  This class is offered in alternate years to 11th and 12th graders.

Language Arts - Speech and Drama  1 semester
Students in 11th and 12th grades study public speaking and practice it in many speaking situations.  They learn to organize information and develop demonstration, informational, persuasive, and inspirational speeches.  Through increasing challenges and practice, they gain confidence and skill.  In the drama portion of this class, students learn foundational elements of acting and production.  Students participate in dramatic readings, readers' theater, monologues, and group performances.  Students are highly encouraged to take part in the annual drama production of the school.

Language Arts - College Writing  1 semester
In this class for juniors and seniors, students are challenged to hone their writing skills before college.  Students learn MLA Style to prepare their papers and practice writing about literature that they will later use in college. Students do an extensive research project.  Through a multi-genre project, students attempt many types of creative and technical writing all related to a theme of their choosing.

Science - Chemistry  2 semesters
The purpose of this class is to explore God's order in creation at a molecular level.  To do so, students explore the composition, structure, properties, and transformation of matter.  Extensive lab work supports and illustrates classroom study.  Topics include the periodic table, states of matter, acid-base reactions, Boyle's law, and bonding.  Students also receive an introduction to organic chemistry and biochemistry.  This class is offered in alternate years to 11th and 12th graders.

Science - Physics  2 semesters
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the absolute physical laws set into place by God and how these laws and forces affect our lives.  Topics covered include Newtonian Mechanics (motion, acceleration, forces, momentum, energy), electricity, magnetism, light and sound.  Students develop problem solving competency through classroom study and lab work.  An introduction comparison from sub-atomic particles to galaxies help students broaden their understanding of the physical world God designed.  This course is an excellent foundation for future study in science and engineering.  This class is offered in alternate years to 11th and 12th graders.

Mathematics - Pre Calculus  2 semesters
Pre Calculus is designed to prepare students for calculus and other higher math.  It includes further study of trigonometry, logarithms, functions, inverse functions, polar graphs, matrices, and statistics.  It also includes an introduction to basic calculus topics like sequences, limits, and derivatives.

Bible - Timeless Truth  1 semester
Students will explore issues concerning bibliology and apologetics in order to develop a distinctly Christian worldview enabling students with a defense for their faith in preparation for life after high school.

Bible - Life Shaping Decision  1 semester
Students will explore God's word for a better understanding of their uniqueness especially as it pertains to career planning and gift/skill stewardship.  Students will complete a number of personal inventories in order to assess what God's will for their lives might be.

Spanish - Spanish 3  2 semesters
Students will acquire additional Spanish language and cultural awareness skills.  Students will be taught more advanced grammar and vocabulary, and then use their language skills to study Spain and Latin America, in Spanish.  They will initiate, respond to and sustain face-to-face communication in Spanish.  Students will also translate, write and perform original drama to strengthen the link between the written word and expressive communication.
